Customers can’t donate to charity anymore

As part of Amazon CEO Andy Jassy’s cost-cutting activities, the company is expected to lay off about 18,000 employees.

Most of them will come from HR and Retail.

Apparently, its AmazonSmile Charity team is also affected by cost-cutting.

It will shut down on the 20th of February 2023.

AmazonSmile allowed customers to donate 0.5% of eligible items’ purchase prices to charity.

Since its launch ten years ago, the company has donated $500 million to charities selected by customers.

Amazon isn’t the only company that plans mass layoffs

Actually, it's in good company.

  • Elon Musk fired half of Twitter’s employees.
  • Meta plans to eliminate 13% of its staff.
  • Microsoft will lay off 12,000 employees.

Why are so many tech companies laying off their employees?

There’s a wave of mass layoffs.

  • Growing economic uncertainty
  • changing demand
  • overhiring during the pandemic

…are factors that are driving this trend.
