Artifact — Why The New TikTok For Text Could Be Powerful For Medium Writers

  • 3 min read

Artifact is all about high-quality articles, facts, and artificial intelligence. If the startup trusts Medium, this could mean more views and referrals.

I really like TikTok’s recommendations.

They aren’t driven by the people I follow or what people I follow like.

They are driven by algorithmic predictions — regardless of who your friends are or who you followed.

I guess that’s one of the reasons TikTok is the most downloaded app in the world.

Now Instagram co-founders (who sold Instagram to Facebook) Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger launched the brand new app Artifact.

It’s all about “articles, facts, and artificial intelligence.”

ARTI …= Articles

Artifact is a news aggregation app.

It shows you personalized recommendations for news articles and blog posts in your feed.

FACT = Facts & AI

Artifacts want to deliver high-quality content that is fact-driven.

It shows stories from leading top-tier media such as New York Times to small blogs and niche sites.

Artifact only includes publishers who adhere to editorial standards of quality.

(A )= AI

You tap on the articles that interest you, and Artifact’s AI learns from you.

Reading time is a crucial metric. Artifact measure how long users spend reading about a subject and will show you more engaging stories.

Based on a curated list of media outlets and blogs as well as curated stories, Artifact’s TikTok-like recommendation algorithm shows you news you are interested in from multiple sources.

It will learn from you so that it can show you similar posts and stories in the future.

How to get the Artifact app?

Artifact opened its waitlist on Tuesday. It’s in beta.

It’s available for both Android and iOS users.

Here’s the link to the waitlist!

Artifact is in private beta.

You can enter your phone number and Artifact will text you a personal invite link when you’re off the waitlist.

Do Medium articles also have a chance to get on the curated list?

I could imagine Systrom and Krieger know Medium’s founder Ev Williams and the platform itself.

Depending on their opinion of Medium’s quality standards, they could decide to put them on the list and also show stories from Medium and/or specific Top Writers (in specific niches).

With Medium CEO Tony Stubblebine looking to raise the bar on quality in 2023, this could be a good place to start.

If Artifact gets big, it could drive traffic to Medium, and its writers and also encourage users to become Medium members.

Kristina God is a Top Writer on Medium. Besides being a full-stack marketer and manager, she is the co-founder of SCM and owns a 5-figure online business together with her husband.
