Book Deal vs. Self-Publishing in 2023 — Which Is The Better Deal?

  • 2 min read

Super deal? Better think twice before you reach out to a major publishing house.

If you’re thinking about publishing a book in 2023 like one of my creator friends does, here are some things to keep in mind.

If your next goal is to reach out to a major publishing house, better think twice.

Apparently, the current scenario is the following…

  • you’re pitching your book to a publishing house
  • once accepted, they want to own 50% to 85% of your book
  • 15% to 50% royalty on your book
  • they’ll give you between $10,000 and $30,000 advance

From an entrepreneurial perspective, this looks like a huge mistake.

Quick question:

Why do you want to partner with somebody who wants 50% plus of your profits?

You’ve invested a ton of time (maybe years of your life!) and energy in writing your book!

It’s not necessary to give up a bunch of money.

Alternate solution — self-publishing!

I’m curious. Would self-publishing be a thing for you?
