Medium Writing 101

Easy step-by-step guide for new writers

Yesterday, John Couper reached out to me via email.

I’ve recently started on Medium (…)

Since I couldn’t find an explanation of how to post a story into a publication, could you either tell me where that info lives or just describe the process?

John got added as a writer by the popular publication ILLUMINATION owned by Dr Mehmet Yildiz.

If you have been added as a writer you can add drafts to a publication.

I’ve submitted draft stories around 400 times so far.

In this step-by-step guide, I’m going to show you how to add a draft to a publication.

Here’s how to add a draft to a publication (desktop version)

  • Click on Stories in your avatar menu.

  • Click on Drafts and choose the draft post you want to submit to the publication.
  • Click on the drop-down menu (grey arrow) and select Edit draft.

  • Congrats, you’re now in the Edit Mode.
  • Select the three-dot menu in the top-right corner to open your story Settings.
  • Select Add to publication.

  • I’m a writer for many publications. So I’m going to select the pub I want to submit my draft to. In this case, it’s Illumination. I click on it.

  • Your draft will not be immediately submitted to the publication. You first see a Story Preview.

  • Click the Submit to publication button to send your draft to the publication’s editors for review.*

The publication’s editors will now review your draft and (hopefully) schedule it for publishing.

👍Tag correctly

You can add up to 5 tags (=labels) to your draft story.

Use them to let Medium’s algorithm, curators as well as readers know what your story is all about.

Here’s the list of the 74 most popular tags:

#Writing and #Advice belong to the Top Tags on Medium. With these labels, you could become a Top Writer (=makes your profile and articles more searchable on Medium).

#Marketing, #Newsletter, and #Email Marketing arent’t eligible for Top Writer status but they help you to specify what your story is all about.

👍 Pro tip: Combine popular tags with specific tags. Here’s more:
