How To Get Your Stories Distributed Beyond Your Following On Medium

  • 5 min read

and what to do when they don’t.

Well, the good thing is no one knows anymore whether Medium picked a story for further distribution or not.

Because Medium killed the “chosen for further distribution” notification.

So you don’t have to check your stats and look for this notification anymore:

However, if you want Medium’s human curators or machine learning algorithms to pick your story and distribute it further, here’s what you need to keep in mind:

5 things to keep in mind

1 Write reader-centric.

Write with the reader in mind. Medium wants to make its paying readers happy.

So experiment or ask them directly what they like reading from you.

2 Add value.

For paying readers it’s all about value. They want to learn something. They want to feel your writing and they want to build a connection with you.

So always ask yourself: “What’s in it for my readers?”

3 Show your expertise.

Game over for faux experts. It’s the era of real-life experts.

When writing a story show your expertise. Proof that you’re the one person that can help your readers.

Keep in mind: especially if you want to write about relationship topics, you’re an expert in your own experience. Maybe share a picture of you and your hubby still happily married after 10 years when writing about how to stay happy with your partner.

4 Include testimonials.

If you’re a solopreneur, ask your clients for a testimony so that you can share it in a story.

WOW-worthy testimonials help your readers to trust you and your words. Let your clients/people you helped speak.

5 Show results.

If you can, share screenshots (don’t fake them!). There are a lot of writers on Medium who claim to earn x amount on YouTube, Pinterest, or NewsBreak. Most readers are suspicious. Adding screenshots can help to build trust.

When you do a 30 Day (cold shower) challenge, show yourself under the shower. Walk the talk!

BONUS tips

Since we can’t see anymore whether Medium likes our story or not, always share your story on Twitter and on every channel you are active.

Another tip is to try to get published with bigger publications.

What’s in it for you?

Your story will be shown beyond your following. It will be shown to the followers of big publications with thousands of active readers!

Here’s a list of the Top 10 Publications but there are many more:

How do I know how many followers a publication has?

If you want to know how many followers a publication has, use my little hack:

  • Search for a publication.
  • type /latest to see their follower count.

Final Takeaways

If you want to get your stories distributed beyond your following by Medium: show results, include testimonials, show your expertise, add value and write reader-centric.

You don’t have to do all the above-mentioned things BUT the more you add to your story, the better.

Oh and no worries. This doesn’t have to sound braggy.

Just tie the information in your stories. Naturally. Without too much pressure.

Plus, you can take advantage of the thousands of readers bigger publications have by becoming a writer and submitting your story to Mind Cafe, Entrepreneur’s Handbook, Mental Illness, Better Programming… or whatever publications fit the topic you’re writing about.

Ready for take-off?

I’m curious. Do you have any more tips or questions?
