Is Charging Money for Your Writing Unreasonable and Wrong?

  • 2 min read

I don’t get this debate

I see a trend on the newsletter platform Substack.

Apparently, a lot of people think it’s silly, or even a bit bad, to ask others to pay for what they write.

They say that really good writing shouldn’t be about making money.

They believe all writing should be free for everyone.

They argue that the main goal is to make great writing.

I don’t get this debate.

On Medium, people complain about their low earnings. Some say they earn less than $5.

On Substack, if you get one person to fall in love with your writing, you get at least $5 per month and this is recurring income. You’ll get this over and over again.

If you can make another person find value in your writing, you earn $10 per month.

It’s YOUR writing. Your ideas, sweat, and tears. Why not offer people to pay for YOUR words?
