Now It’s Time To Tip And Get Tipped On Medium

  • 7 min read

Medium is introducing all sorts of new features aimed at helping individual writers. Here’s one future key feature — a tip jar

One thing is for sure, big upgrades will be happening on Medium.

Within the last past few months, Medium already seems to be introducing all sorts of new features aimed at helping individual writers.

Still, one key feature is missing yet.

To tip means ‘to give someone who has provided you with a service an extra amount of money to thank them.’ Cambridge Dictionary

In one of his latest posts, my friend Burk announced the following:

To show that I care, I will start giving out money to my favorite writers.

Buying a virtual coffee, for example.

I’ve done that in the past. I’ll do it again. Burk

That’s an awesome idea, isn’t it? I love to support other creators and thank them for their work.

First, let’s have a look at what exactly Burk means by ‘buying a virtual coffee’.

Keep on reading to get the answer and then let’s have a look what Medium has to over.

How you can tip other writers

As Burk mentioned, for instance, you can buy your favorite writer a ‘virtual coffee’. It’s a viable system and a nice option.

Buy me a coffee

My husband is offering his followers this simple tool to support his work.

He’s for instance creating free tutorials about web development on YouTube.

Here’s his Buy Me A Coffee page.

If your followers enjoy the content you create they can…

  • ‘buy’ you a virtual coffee to show support at a set dollar amount you determine, for instance $5.
  • The payouts are processed immediately using PayPal or Stripe
  • You can embed a link to your profile page where you can accept donations in your Medium stories, for instance at the bottom of your articles.
  • It’s free to use but take a 5% transaction fee on every donation.
  • Creators can also set up monthly subscription plans and set up tiers for different levels of paying supporters.

What my husband loves the most about this donation tool are the comments such as…

Absolutely love your videos (…) Keep doing what you’re doing. I bought 10 coffees.

Ko-fi

Top Writer Shannon Ashley is a Ko-fi Ambassador and raising money for her ‘Lipedema Care, Surgery and Recovery’.

You can buy her a virtual coffee for $5. She has already receive 7k+ coffees.

If you love her writing and want to become a supporter her Ko-fi page gives you the opportunity.

If your followers enjoy the content you create they can…

  • ‘buy’ you a virtual coffee to show support at a set dollar amount you determine, for instance, $5 as Shannon does.
  • The payouts are processed immediately using PayPal, Apple Pay, or Stripe
  • You can embed a link to your profile page where you can accept donations in your Medium stories, for instance at the bottom of your articles.
  • It’s free to use and charges a 0% transaction fee on donations.
  • Creators can also set up one membership level. The monthly fee is directly tied to your one-time donation amount.
  • You can’t set up membership levels such as with ‘Buy me a coffee’.

How you can tip other writers on Medium

Let’s have a look what Medium has to offer us.

Unfortunately, Medium doesn't offer a tip or donation button (yet).

Although, in my opinion, this could become a key feature on this platform in the future.

It would be an easy way to simply say thanks to your favorite writer as motivation and gratification.

Don’t wait for an opportunity, create it!

In his latest short form post Burk said in the comments to Chris Zappa that he already requested a tipping tool via the help section.

A tipping tool would make supporting fun and easy.

My idea: We could make a petition.

So please, leave a comment in case you would like to have a tipping feature. We’re stronger together and could make a petition.

Don’t wait for an opportunity, create it!

It’s a key feature on Vocal Media

Since my husband is a web developer he knows that a native tipping feature isn’t a biggie. It could be easily implemented into this platform.

In fact, one of Medium’s competitors, Vocal Media, has an integrated tipping feature.

As you can see below you can support Burk with a small one-off tip at a dollar amount you determine, for instance, $1.

Good karma and gratitude

An anonymous reader gave my fellow friend Xin Xin a tip on Vocal Media.

‘Whoever sent me a dollar tip, my heart is full of gratitude, and may good karma find your way.

And today, you made my writer’s mind filled with my private dancer’s fantasy.’

From her reaction, you can see the positive impact a small tip can have.

It’s a stimulus to continue your writing journey and to keep on creating engaging content (for free).

It’s all about ‘true fans’

Having 1k+ followers on Medium doesn’t entitle me to anything.

I have to earn my follower’s loyalty, attention, trust, and money every day.

Still, it would be great if my biggest fans could become ‘true fans’ not only by reading my articles but also by having the opportunity to tip me for my work — especially if there’s an article they really enjoyed reading.

As I said in the beginning of my article, Burk is thinking about tipping his favorite writers via external platforms such as ‘Buy me a coffee’ or ‘Ko-fi’ in the future.

As far as I’m concerned, I only know Patricia Rosa, Burk who have a ‘Buy me a coffee’ account, and Robert Ralph who owns a ‘Ko-fi’ account.

If you want to give your followers a way to support your work my recommendation is to join their ranks.

Just within a few minutes, you can create a Ko-fi and/or Buy me a coffee account. I will do so too!

You can embed a link at the bottom of your articles. Then you simply need to drive your biggest fans to use the link and become your supporters too.

Final Thoughts

I believe that true fans, loyal readers, and writers want to support each other. Therefore, a tipping feature is a must for the future of this platform.

Considering that many other platforms, for instance, Vocal Media, have a native tipping feature, it would be a great thing to have it on this platform too.

Great stories deserve to be rewarded. It’s a simple way to fund your work.

Maybe we’ll be pleasantly surprised someday to find this feature become reality. Still, we shouldn't wait for the right opportunity. We should create it!

Medium is always trying to bring its creators more features that improve their experience on this platform. Tipping could become one of our favorites, don’t you think?

Therefore I recommend starting a petition in order to get Medium’s attention. Here’s how you can become part of it:

  • 👏🏻👏🏻 Clap away for the change you’d like to support. 👏🏻👏🏻
  • 🙏🙏 Leave a comment in order to show that you care about this important feature. 🙏🙏
