Shout-Out-Opportunity — Let’s Celebrate Great Writers and Guides Among Us and Boost Them

Reply in the comments with a shoutout for another great writer or guide.

Medium’s feed sucks.

I know writers on Medium want more ways to discover great writing.

As you may know, I’m always looking to celebrate writers and their success stories on Medium. So besides Sinem Günel and Zulie Rane, I recently interviewed Michelle Teheux.

She told me about her favorite writers. But before I share more, I’d like to invite you to participate in a wonderful shout-out opportunity to show some love and appreciation.

How to participate and Boost others?

I encourage you to reply in the comments with a shoutout for another great writer whose work you keep thinking about or guide who inspired you to get started on Medium, grow, and earn an income here.

I’ll go first:

Guide — Robin Wilding 💎– she always has the latest news about Medium and reports about them in a super fun way. I’d love it if I could write in such a funny way. As a non-native, I love her wit and humor and learning new words… not only motherfu**** Robin, I know keeping up with Medium’s latest updates, and trends and interpreting Medium’s communication isn’t easy. Thanks for all you do. I know it takes A LOT of time to write meta stories because I also love to write them.

Often people say: “Was it you or was it Robin sharing x about Medium?” We could sell a Medium course haha ^^

Inspiring writer — Michelle Teheux — she’s a powerhouse of personal stories, anecdotes, and opinion pieces. I really love her writing and her funny anecdotes about a little “romance” when she left a voice memo or buying an expresso machine from her best-performing story.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Michelle and here’s what Michelle told me about her favorite writers:

I seek out my favorite writers. The algorithm doesn’t always get them to me — sometimes I have to type their names into the search bar to find them. I like a variety. I read Ossiana Tepfenhart even though her life is 180 degrees from mine, because, like Shannon, she’s willing to invite us into her world.

I don’t have any friends IRL like Ossiana. I learn about a different world from her. I love to read Walter Rhein. Our politics seem similar. I like Dustin Arand thoughtful pieces, too. I could name so many others whose work I really appreciate. I don’t want these people to leave. Sally Prag Amber Fraley Kendra Sparkles too. Adeline Dimond

Oh, I can’t forget Cory Doctorow. He is amazing. Those writers cover a pretty broad territory, but they’re all good. Obviously, I could name another 30 great writers I enjoy.

I think it’s fine that Medium has hobby writers, too, but let’s be clear: Readers do not come here to read the work of people who are just starting out. Maybe they’ll get there, and that’s fantastic if they do — but an essay written by someone who is new to writing is probably not going to be as compelling as something that Cory Doctorow is going to come up with. It’s people like him I pay to read.

Traditionally, it’s been damned difficult to make money as a writer, and nobody should expect they should be able to join this platform, write a few stories and make real money. Not unless they’re damned good, anyway.
