Subscribing vs. Following = Substack vs. Medium

  • 2 min read

Subscribing as an action is pretty heavyweight.

Almost every week someone asks me which platform is better: Medium or Substack.

I definitely should create a Medium vs. Substack video for my YouTube channel but before I’ll do this I wanted to share how I see it with you to include your thoughts and suggestions into my video.

For me, subscribing as an action is pretty heavyweight. In comparison, following someone is pretty lightweight.

At least, that’s how it feels for me.

It’s easy to hit the “follow” button on a bunch of accounts on Medium or something like that but subscribing is costly.

Per newsletter, you pay at least $5 because Substack wants you to monetize your work and stop writing for free and for followers.

Also, people with a small but engaged subscriber base who are willing to pay for the writing of their favorite writer can make good money.
