Who Funds Medium?

It’s add-free. So there are no dollars rolling in from big brands.

According to The Verge, Medium entered 2021 with more than 700,000 paid subscribers and a revenue of $35 million.

Not bad for a publishing company with only 70 employees.

You might wonder besides the paying members who fund Medium?

Medium is ad-free so there are no dollars rolling in from big brands.

Here’s what I read:

  • To date, Medium has raised $132 million in venture capital.
  • Its last funding came in 2016.

Who funds Medium now?

  • Medium's founder Ev Williams has been funding the company out of his own pocket since 2016.

As of February 2022, Ev’s net worth is estimated at US$2.1 billion.

Additionally, Medium has 700,000 paying members who pay $50 per year.

I wonder. Would you pay more than $5 for Medium’s ad-free reading experience to support the business?
