Writers Are Chameleons, Says Taylor Swift — So Stop Thinking About Your Niche!

and do this instead

It can be really overwhelming figuring out who to be online and what to write about to get where you want to go.

Most writers think they have to stick to a specific niche = category.

Your niche is what you’re writing on Medium is all about.

So a lot of new writers think that part of kickstarting their success on Medium is deciding what specific topic to write about.

Is it writing, parenting, tech, creativity, or fashion?

Stop scratching your head about what exactly to write about consistently… superstar Taylor Swift can help you.

What does superstar Taylor Swift think about niches?

Yesterday, singer and songwriter Taylor Swift celebrated and graduated from New York University’s Class of 2022.

She gave a speech which I really loved.

Taylor Swift has good news for all who are struggling with finding their niche (minute 16):

I’ve made and released 11 albums and in the process, I’ve switched genre from country to pop to alternative to folk.

Meaning, Swift has experimented a lot.

She’s a singer and songwriter, producer, actress, influencer, ambassador for artist’s rights, and philanthropist.

She touches lives around the globe.

Be who you want to be and write what you want to write about

If you consider yourself “multi-passionate”, here’s the part of her speech that will resonate the most with you:

We are all literary chameleons, and I think it’s fascinating.

It’s just a continuation of the idea that we are so many things all the time.

The colorful lizards are known as one of the few animals that can change skin color.

Their skin can show different colors and color patterns.

And we are so many things all the time. Not one specific color.

But I see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that’s why I love you
So don’t be afraid to let them show
Your true colors
True colors are beautiful
Like a rainbow

Finally, somebody said it.

Depending on the situation and current circumstances, most of us write differently:

  • You send different types of emails to your supervisor than to your best friend.
  • You communicate differently on Medium vs. TikTok or YouTube.
  • You create different texts in your 9–5 than in your side hustle.

Most of us play many roles in our lives.

(…) most of us write in a different voice for different situations, Taylor sums it up.

You are multi-faceted and your life is colorful.

I’m sure you have many different experiences and talents in all kinds of fields and subject areas.

You don’t need to stick to one specific niche in order to be successful.

Just write about what you already know and love and you’re golden!

So don’t be afraid to let them show
Your true colors
True colors are beautiful
Like a rainbow

Are you multifaceted and multi-passionate, too?
