Writing on Medium Isn’t Going To Be Easy, It’s Going To Be Worth It

  • 4 min read

Learn how I jumped from 150 views to 30,000 as a new writer.

When people subscribe to my Substack newsletter I offer to respond with a little “hi” and introduction.

Since I started asking people to do this, almost every day I get 1–3 emails from new subscribers, which is great.

We often talk about why they feel stuck in their comfort zone.

  • Instead of writing their own blog posts, they consume my stuff or the stories of other writers.
  • Instead of starting their own Substack newsletter, they are overthinking everything … and never get started.

I particularly liked this question:

“Is writing on Medium easy? If not, I’m not in.”

Wow! Okay! Please tell me what in life is easy.

Here’s my advice for anyone who doesn’t feel ready to leave their comfy box:

Writing on Medium isn’t going to be easy but it’s going to be worth it!

By the way, Staying in your comfort zone is more damaging than you think.

Your comfort zone is a danger zone.

Staying too comfy can be risky. If you only do things you’re used to, you might not want to try new things, and that can make you feel less brave.

The longer you live in your comfort zone, the more it shrinks… which means your self-confidence is being destroyed.

If you want to explore something no, leave your comfort zone

No matter what exactly you want to achieve and explore, start today.

Don’t overthink it. Don’t wait for the perfect moment. This moment won’t come. This moment is now, new writer.

Although most of you think it’s been far longer, I’ve “only” been writing here for 27 months now. Every moment of my part-time writing journey was worth it.

Within 10 months on Medium, I jumped from $0.17 and 147 Views to $500 and 30K.

December 2020 vs. October 2021

I started my writing journey at the end of December 2020 with 147 views and $0.17.

This was a huge milestone for me!

How did I reach this milestone?

  • 👍I showed up almost every single day and shared a short story (150 words or less).
  • 👍I made writing a micro-habit. No matter what, I made writing in the morning before work or in the evening after I put my baby to bed a non-negotiable.
  • 👍I cared for my readers and subscribers from day one by replying to their suggestions and questions, helping them, and mentioning them.
  • 👍I always tried to stay positive and optimistic about Medium’s changes and the ups and downs of writing online.
  • 👍I let myself be inspired by other writers (outside of Medium). I learned to not work in a silo, but to connect with other writers, show them my admiration, and let myself be inspired by their work.
  • 👍I read a lot of Medium stories to get a feeling for the content Medium readers like.
  • 👍I stopped trying to be perfect and embraced just being a writer who makes mistakes on the way.

Bottom Line

I’m not here to tell you writing on Medium is easy. I’m here to tell you it’s worth it. Why?

👍You can make a bigger impact

Medium is like a mall. There are people who are interested in specific topics and they pay you with their reading time.

Over time you learn to combine topics your readers want to learn more about and what you’re passionate about.

In this intersection, you can make a much bigger impact than on your own WordPress blog with only a handful of views.

Medium has a built-in audience. The mall is already filled with people they only need to know that you have a story there.

👍Your views and earnings will grow over time.

Pennies transform into $1.

$1 transforms into $10.

$10 into $100 and so on.

All you have to do is to start today!
